PURPOSE / SCOPE:
Provide guidelines for the development and planning of clinical affiliations.
POLICY:
ICOM has defined a process to ensure adequacy of pre-doctoral clinical experiences. This process will be overseen by the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. The Assistant/Associate Dean will acquire new clinical rotations, monitor existing clinical sites, and expand select rotation sites into regional clinical campuses where osteopathic medical students will have the opportunity to complete core rotations in one geographic location. The process will include:

Ongoing review of the clinical curriculum in the third and fourth years to fulfill the institutional Mission.

Perform an annual needs assessment to ensure clinical rotations to accommodate 120% of the anticipated approved class size of 150, and to determine the areas of emphasis in faculty development.

Identifying hospitals to serve as potential training sites for students and residents.

Including interested sites and their faculty in the ICOM curricular development and professional development processes. These include faculty development sessions.

Confirming interested sites as documented in our signed Affiliation Agreements.

Annually reviewing the process and performance of affiliated sites to ensure high quality educational experiences for ICOM students.

Implementing the evaluation process and determine measurable outcomes which relate to the quality of the clinical faculty and the learning at the affiliated clinical sites.

Maintaining this ongoing process to ensure the annual number of available clinical clerkship opportunities will accommodate at least 120% of the anticipated approved class size of 150 the number of third- and fourth-year students.

ICOM currently has developed capacity to accommodate at least 120% of the anticipated approved class size of 150 for third and fourth-year students during their clinical training. These affiliations assure ICOM will have sufficient capacity to train students in behavioral health, emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, internal medicine - subspecialty, pediatrics, surgery, surgery - subspecialty, and women’s health.
